OTAPAWA POLL HEREFORDS
Otapawa Herefords was founded in 1969 with females selected from Kai Iwi and in 1970 form Stanway and Maungahina Dispersal. Our first sire was “Gay Robert 40th” .
The Polled Stud was established with the purchase of the 2nd placed heifer “Waihuka P Amethyst 44″ at the National Show and Sale for $2000. Females were also purchased from the Ruru Stud. A.I. Was extensively used for 3 years. In 1977 “Ruru Emblem 81″ was purchased for $3000 being top price of the sale. He has bred very good sound cattle with a big frame.
At the National Show and Sale in 1980, champion “Neeward Enterprise 7th” was purchased for a National Record price of $15,400. He has bred very correct cattle.
1982
In 1982 Action Dispersal Sale “Action Princess 697″ by “Woodlands Beaufighter” was purchased for $7100, a NZ record female price. 1982 National Show and Sale, “Ravenswood Exclusive Fella” was purchased for $6600.
1983
At the Sydney Royal Show in 1983 Grand Champion “Majestic Freeway”, NZ semen rights were purchased in partnership with John Philips “Wharehau” and in 1985 “BT Butler 409R”, NZ semen rights and currant herd sire.
1985
“Otapawa Case 176″ gained 2nd place in the Junior Bull Class at the World Hereford Conference Show in Christchurch, then the next year the All Breeds yearling bull at the Auckland Easter Show and followed that up by gaining top price at the 1985 National Show and Sale of $20,500, sold to John and Max Morrison of the “Ardo” Stud.
1988
“Otapawa Rampage 267″ sold for $11,500 at the 1988 National Sale to the Matariki Stud, Kaikoura. 1988 also saw Otapawa purchase a quarter share in the Adelaide, Melbourne and Sydney Royal Grand Champion “Heatherdale Arrow F33″.
1990
“Otapawa Hy Sky H28″ sold for $8000 at 1990 National Show and Sale to the “Waidale” Stud.
“Grassmere Jackpot” an outstanding son of “Braxton Great Southern” was purchased in April 1990
1991
“Awataha Petigrew” purchased at 1991 National Show and Sale for $16,000.
1992
“Koanui Top Gun K346″ purchased privately from Koanui Stud for $25,000 in June 1992.
“Margfred Park Dynasty K58″ semen used.
1993
“Bronwyn Moccona” (Jnr Champ Sydney) semen used.
National Bull Sale, “Monymusk Discovery L34 ” was purchased in partnership with the “Kowhai” stud for top price of $35,000.
An extensive Embryo Transfer programme was carried out during the 1993 breeding season to maximise the reproduction form our superior breeding cows.
1995
National Sale. “Otapawa Nightsky N27″ awarded Reserve Champion and sold to “Okawa” and “Capethorne” Studs for $11,000.
1996
National Bull Sale, “Otapawa Panther P116″, sold for top price $17,250.
1999
Semen imported from JC Cattle Co USA. World leading multi trait sire , JC Catalyst 7C.
2000
Doonbidie Hustler R51 semen imported from Australia. An intensive IVF Flush programme began with Amthyst H22. Excellent results. Leonora P23 full time flush programme on farm.
2001
Nation Bull Sale, “Otapawa Utah U7″ sold to Lake Station and Nelson Enterprise Studs for $16,000.
Imported semen form LLL Ranch, and Sky Acres Ranch, USA. Amethyst N22 flushed on farm.
Semen sold to Australia from “Otapawa Dr Jekyl 0025 ET”. Semen sold to Falklands Islands, and South America.
2002
National Bull Expo, “Otapawa Hackett 31 ET”, sold to Awakino Fortunes Stud for $10,000. “Otapawa Dr Suess 0026ET”, sold to Braxton stud for $11,000.
Studbrook D’artagnion V086 AI ET was purchased from Dubbo National Australian Poll Hereford Sale in partnership with Stanfeilds Bushey Park Poll Hereford Stud. Imported Live to New Zealand.
Studbrook D’artagnion arrives New Zealand. Otapawa Leonora P23 in full time IVF programme at Ruakura Research Centre.
2003
“Bowen Western Star W35″ was purchased from Dubbo Australia in partnership with Stanfields Bushey Park and Karen Arnott, for $45,000. Importing Live to NZ October/November 2003.
2004
Otapawa Skymate 2046 gains top price of $32,000 at the National Beef Expo. Sold to Keelryn and Big River Poll Hereford Studs.
On Farm Bulls sale Otapawa Tarzan 2072 ET sold for $25,500 and Otapawa Dr Jekyl 2114 sold for $16,000 to Northland Syndicate of Studs. Otapawa Samurai 2002 ET sold to Craigmore stud for $10,000.
2005
On farm bull sale averages $5448 with a total clearance. Otapawa High Energy sell at the National Expo for top Price of $21,500.
Stud looses Amethyst H22 (18yrs) to age related problems.
2006 Otapawa Zulu 4063 sold to leelands Stud for $9000.
2007 Otapawa Skymate son sold for the top price in Denmark. Otapawa Spark 3060 semen sold into Australia and South America and Canada.
2008 Braybook Cherokee C200 and Braybook Skynigh C202 sired by Otapawa Skymate 2046 sold at Australian National for $7000 and $8000 respetivley. Otapawa Spark 3060 sons, Monymusk Captain and Monymusk Carlos sold for $17500 and $10000 respctivley inon farm sales. Kairuru Flint pruchased as yearling rom Beef Expo for $12000.
2012 Otapawa ignite sells for $26,000 to Phillip, Mary and Tom Atkins. Otapawa Brightspark sold to Mokairau Stud for $13,500.
2014 Purchased Okahu Sonny Bill from the National Beef Expo for top price of .$40,000 Judged Supreme Champion All breeds.
2016 Mt Difficult Centennial L34 purchased in half share with Cascade Poll Herefords Australia. Otapawa Spark 4041 sells at on farm sale for $15,000 to Birch Hill Station
2017 Otapawa Admiral 5001 sells to Glenbrae Stud for $32,000 at NZ Beef EXPO. Seven cows are in quarantine for Export flushing.
RSK E2046 Digby ET 20C sire by Otapawa Skymate 2046 was awarded theCanadian Western Agribition Grand Champion Poll Hereford Bull and top 10 RBCSupreme Finalist.
2018 Warrangundi Minnesota Grandsire D’artagnion and out of a Otapawa Spark Damwins Grand Champion Hereford Bull and Supreme Exhibit at Sydney Royal show.Stuart travels to USA to search out genetics. Privately imported TH Frontier 174Efrom USA

2020 No ON FARM Auction held but private paddock sales due to Covid 19 restrictions.
2021 New Zealand rights purchased om new Herd Sire, KJ MHPH RW 364C Media 240J. Semen imported from Australian Sire Tubruk Regent.
We have endeavoured to maintain a high standard in our female herd with careful attention being paid to structural soundness, milking ability and productivity.
